Tips for International Students Learning English

There are a variety of ways that international students can learn English in their spare time and in the holidays. When you have a free half hour with nothing else to do, why not make the most of that time by practising your English skills?

There are many apps to choose from that will help you learn English. All Apps featured on this list come with high customer ratings and recent big fixes, meaning you will get the most out of your experience with these apps.

This will help you to feel more confident and achieve better grades when you return to your studies.

Practising English Everyday

There are many ways you can practise your English through everyday activities, such as:

 • Watching English films / TV with the subtitles on
 • Reading everything: signs, menus, posters, newspapers, advertisements
 • Listening to the radio
 • Reading books. If there is a word you don’t know, see if you can work out what it means from the context of the sentence. If not, look it up and then try and use that word in sentences throughout the day.
 • Writing a diary / journal. Describe what you did throughout the day in English. It’s a great way to log your memories and to improve your English writing skills at the same time. You will be able to see how your writing improves over time.
 • Socialising with friends. Playing sports is a great way to meet new people and practise your English. Try and find friends of a different nationality to yourself so you are encouraged to speak English.

Top Apps for Learning English

The British Council has Apps for Learn English to download from their website onto your mobile phone and tablet.

Learn English Grammar

This is a top interactive grammar practice app designed to help improve your English grammar. This will help you both when talking to people in English, and with your written work during your studies. The app offers thousands of questions to help practise and reinforce your English grammar skills.

Practice English Grammar

This app was nominated for the 2014 Best Education App and comes with over a thousand questions, over 750 flash cards and over 100 games.

The Speak English App

This app can also be downloaded from iTunes and is designed for iPhone and iPad. This helps you to train your English pronunciation and speaking skills. You listen to the spoken words, repeat and compare the results!

Grammar Express: Tenses Lite

This app can be used to learn your tenses, which many international students find difficult, not only at first, but sometimes for a while. This app contains over 1000 examples with grammar rules and 750 test questions with explanations.

You can practice your skills the next time you are speaking with someone, for example when ordering food or when speaking with your class mates! Learning English really is all about how much effort and time you are willing to put into practising your skills. Making this a regular habit in your spare time like evenings and holidays will help you to succeed faster.

We think it’s a cool idea to keep a brief learning journal so you can look back on how much effort you put in and can see the rewards of your own hard work!

Tips for International Students

How should you go about preparing for life at university? This article offers some useful tips for international students on how to prepare for coming to University in the UK.

1. Prepare Academically

There are a variety of routes to University that you can consider to ensure you will be capable of making your course a success once you’re there. ETC runs four courses that prepare students for academic life at a University in the UK or at an English speaking university overseas. Do check out our separate pages to ensure you have the necessary academic skills:

University Foundation Programme (Business)

Pre-sessional

Higher Pre-sessional

Pre-Masters

Decide what to take to University

As an international student, this is not as simple as packing the car with the entire contents of your bedroom and heading off to University. Get yourself a checklist and ensure you only bring the essentials. Find out what is stocked in your halls of residence. You can buy things like low cost new bedding once you get here, to minimise your packing.

Budget for life at University

Again it’s all about research. Find out the cost of food in supermarkets and the cost of socialising in your university town or city. Remember to include rent, bills, food, clothes, socialising and memberships. Your budget planner needs to be written down. It’s a great idea to use Excel or other spreadsheet software to keep an electronic record of your intended spending against actual spending.

Before you Travel: Checklist

 1. Make sure your passport is valid and for how long (if necessary apply for a new one)
 2. Obtain any necessary visa or entry clearance for study in the UK. You can check if you need a visa to study in the UK by checking this Government website.
 3. Apply for accommodation in advance. International students often prefer to stay in Halls of Residence, as do many first year students from the UK. Halls offer comfort, reliable management and a built-in social life!
 4. As the time approaches for you to arrive at university, read through all of your University’s information about fresher’s Week or Orientation week so that you can get the most out of meeting people as soon as possible.
 5. Make sure you have the contact details of all your closest family and friends so that you can keep in touch and feel as comfortable as possible when you first arrive by keeping in contact with those you hold closest.
 6. If you are travelling independently to your campus, check all travel plans carefully including times and ensure you have tickets available in a safe place. Check your luggage allowance for the all-important packing!
 7. Check your insurance: this will include travel insurance and possibly medical insurance.
 8. If you are on any medication or have any medical issues at all, make sure you get a translated letter from your doctor with details of any conditions and medications.
 9. Check with your bank whether you need any approval for exchange control and order enough sterling cash for at least your first week and for your travel to the UK.

We hope that you found this checklist useful and will have a wonderful time wherever you choose to study at University in the UK.

CEFR Levels: what are they? http://www.etc-inter.net/cefr-levels-what-are-they/ http://www.etc-inter.net/cefr-levels-what-are-they/#respond Thu, 28 Jan 2016 11:16:30 +0000 http://www.etc-inter.net/?p=8076 The post CEFR Levels: what are they? appeared first on ETC International College.

]]>

What is the CEFR?

The CEFR is the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. This is an important guideline that is used across Europe and increasingly throughout the world, to describe achievements of learners of foreign languages.

Why is this necessary?

There are widely varying degrees of proficiency (or ability) when learning to speak a language. Whilst someone may be able to say “Hello” and order a drink, someone else might achieve a level of fluency even in complex situations, that means they could work as a translator! There are clearly many levels of proficiency in between.

When you play an instrument you are graded for proficiency to show how capable you are, the CEFR levels help to identify an individual’s language ability.

How did CEFR levels develop?

They were put together by the Council of Europe as the main part of the project “Language Learning for European Citizenship” between 1989 and 1996.

It provides a standard for methods of learning, teaching and assessing which applies to all languages in Europe.

In November 2001, a European Union Council Resolution recommended using the CEFR to set up systems of validation of language ability. Someone who claims they can speak a language would have to show which level they could genuinely operate at.

What are the 6 reference levels?

For reference, here is what the levels represent:

Level A contains 2 levels for a Basic User. These are:

 • A1 Breakthrough or Beginner
 • A2 Way stage or Elementary

Level B contains 2 levels for an Independent User. These are:

 • B1 Threshold or Intermediate
 • B2 Vantage or Upper Intermediate

Level C contains 2 levels for a Proficient User. These are:

 • C1 Effective Operational Proficiency or Advanced
 • C2 Mastery or Proficiency

Student benefits of CEFR

At ETC we give you, our students, an exclusive learner portfolio where you can use the CEFR levels as a checklist. This helps you to track your own learning. Each of the 6 levels has a set of criteria explaining what you are able to do e.g. how you express yourself, at each level.

An example would be that a Basic User at level A1 would understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases. Conversely, Proficient Users on level C2 would express themselves spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in complex situations.

As these levels are recognised within a framework throughout the world, they give you a clear assessment point on which to base your progress and current level of proficiency. This can be very useful when applying for other courses, applying for jobs or showing how much progress you have made with your language skills whilst at ETC International School.

In this article we explore the different accommodation options to help you make an informed choice.

What are Homestays?

A homestay is where you stay and live with a local person/family in their home. This is an affordable option that gets you familiar with the local culture and offers home comforts. All families and accommodation have been checked in advance to ensure they are suitable for an enjoyable and comfortable stay.

Benefits of living with a Homestay

Experiencing another culture is all about meeting people. When you stay at home with a family, you will feel ‘at home’ in their home. You will have a cultural experience through speaking with them in English. This will help you to practice your English communication skills when out of the classroom, really making the most of your time in England.

At ETC we try our best to find the perfect family to suit your needs. What’s right for one student will not always be the same for another, which is why we ask you for your preferences when you enrol. Would like a family with pets, children or no-smoking? Halal meals or other dietary requirements? Let us know so we can make your stay with us as comfortable as possible.

Homestays are not only suitable for outgoing personalities: they are a great way to meet people regardless of your personality. In fact, the shyer you are, the more you might benefit from having the support of a family around you. Your host family will show you what it’s really like to live in Bournemouth. Homestays also provide a quality experience that you won’t forget. You may even make friends for life and continue to keep in touch long after you’ve left their home.

ETC Residence

Another great option is to stay in our residence next to the language school. The ETC Residence is where other students of the language school live. You will meet people from all over the world and make friends. This is a very sociable option and will encourage you to meet people in the same situation as you.

You will have the opportunity to do activities together and will be very close to school, town and the beach. You will never be short of a friend. This accommodation option is purpose built for students of ETC.

Special Residence Prices

We currently have an offer on our residence. This offer is valid for all students aged 18+ studying until 30th April 2016. You can choose to have accommodation with or without meals included.
View our ETC Residence Winter Promotion

Comforting atmosphere in Bournemouth

If you are studying with us this winter, you will get to experience the warm, comforting atmosphere of Bournemouth in the winter. With a huge variety of fantastic festivities, there is something for everyone, the young and the young at heart.

So the sun has retired its hat for the year and its getting colder, but that doesn’t stop Bournemouth from providing plenty of entertainment through the colder seasons.

Now is the time you can experience a real holiday time atmosphere in Bournemouth. The leaves are falling off the trees and with their change of colours they are providing a crisp, colourful blanket on the ground, making the gardens an extraordinarily pretty sight. A walk in the Bournemouth gardens is a real treat in the Autumn.

It is also fireworks season, with many places in Bournemouth and Poole offering firework displays. Both Bournemouth and Poole show free displays and there are many more free activities on offer through the autumn and winter months for international students to enjoy.

So what is coming up in Bournemouth?

The German Christmas market is a big hit each year.

“Pardon?” I hear you say. “I thought I was studying in England?”

You are correct! However, German markets have really grown in popularity across the UK in the last decade. Cities and towns all over the UK attempt to bring you a taste of the European festive spirit and Bournemouth exhibits one of the best around.

Christmas-market

What will it look like?

The “Weihnachtsmarkt” which translates as “Christmas Market” features Alpine Chalet stalls, decorated with snow and twinkly fairy lights to light up those dark nights in the run up to Christmas.

The traditional Alpine Chalets sell seasonal handmade gifts, crafts and food gifts from around the world. You can shop for original gifts and unique decorations to delight your friends and family.

The Town Square will be buzzing with entertainment, from music bands, choirs and soloists to street artists, musicians and fire shows. It’s a great way to get involved in the festivities. Grab a bite to eat from the Bratwurst House, snack on roasted chestnuts and wash it down with some Gluhwein (mulled wine – over 18’s only) or a hot chocolate and marshmallows.

If you like to sing along you can join in with Carol Singing and Christmas Karaoke; a great way to improve your English!

When is it on?

The German Christmas Market will be held in Bournemouth Square from 12th November 2015 until 3rd January 2016. It is open every day from 10am – 6pm Monday to Saturday and 10 – 4pm on Sundays.

Open every day except for Christmas Day itself, 25th December.

More entertainment in Bournemouth to come in the next blog…

We provide a free adult activity programme throughout the year. Other activities and excursions are charged individually, depending on the activity. All activities and excursions are included for junior students enrolling on a full junior programme.

Social Opportunities: Excursions

Excursions may also be called ‘days out’ or ‘trips’. Some are organised by ETC and others are organised by a local travel company. We visit places of interest including the historical cities of London, Oxford, Portsmouth and Bath. Other beautiful locations include Christchurch, Swanage & Corfe Castle, The New Forest, Salisbury, Stonehenge, Purbeck and Lulworth Cove. All these locations are classic English holiday sites with significant historical and cultural meaning.

You will have such fun (and keep fit). You will learn new skills. As you are learning, you will improve your spoken English language skills.
Social activities provide the opportunity for you to talk with your friends and with other people outside the classroom. You will practice your new English conversation skills in a real life setting. You will also meet lots of new people and create memories that will last forever.
