English for Business
Aims of the Course
To enable students to communicate effectively in a range of business situations and have the linguistic resources available for the study of a business-based degree course. To give students the skills necessary for them to perform effectively in English in a business context. Students are encouraged to apply any business knowledge and experience that they might have as they work through the course material. Course books will be supplemented with material taken from other sources.

Testing and Progress Monitoring
There will be an initial placement test for entry to this ETC course, coupled with a needs analysis session for student-teacher orientation. There will subsequently be:
* continuous assessment on performance and progress.
* monthly progress assessment tests.
* one Final Assessment Test.
Students will have the opportunity to discuss their progress with their tutor following each assessment. The Centre's academic staff will be happy to provide any additional counselling that might be necessary.
External Exam: Cambridge BEC – Vantage Level (ie. Level 2)
This exam is aimed at learners who wish to obtain a business-related English language qualification. Currently there are 3 levels (Preliminary, Vantage and Higher), each of which assesses students in the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking in a business context.Students may prepare for the Cambridge BEC Vantage-level (ie. Level 2) examination within the ETC Business English course.
Course Duration
12 or 24 weeks.
Structure of the courses
Business English (Standard) - 20 lessons per week
· 20 lessons per week of specialised Business English tuition.
· projects, assignments, case studies, seminars, lectures and group sessions.
· progress reports and assignments.
· optional visits to relevant places of interests.
Business English (Intensive) - 28 lessons per week
· 20 lessons per week of specialised Business English tuition and 8 lessons of general English communication skills per week.

Entry Requirements
Please consult the Director of Studies for information regarding the course entry dates. The minimum age for entry to this course is eighteen. Furthermore, (except by special arrangement) an upper-intermediate level of English is required for entry to the course. Students may be required to take an aptitude test (prior to arrival at ETC) to judge whether their standard of English is sufficient for this course. They may wish to follow a course of English Language Studies (General English) before beginning their course of Business English to make sure that they gain the maximum benefit from their studies.
Maximum Group Size
There is maximum group size of fourteen, in order to allow optimum interaction between group members and the teacher / lecturer. We also stipulate a minimum group size of four, so that the student may benefit from certain projects and class activities which require a high level of student input.
Assessment and Certification
If a student follows an ETC Business English course, he or she will receive a certificate on satisfactory completion of all coursework and assessment pieces. By prior arrangement with Director of Studies, we will also supply periodic progress reports.
