The Intensive IELTS Preparation course includes 28 lessons per week of which 20 lessons is focused on IELTS preparation work and 8 lessons is General English communication practice.

This course helps students to prepare for the IELTS exam by consolidating their language skills and giving additional practice in the sys

tems of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Students will learn about the IELTS test itself and the kind of exam questions and tasks that they will have to complete to achieve their target score.

Pre-IELTS course

Please note that we can sometimes run a Pre-IELTS course, where there are sufficient students wishing to take this course.  The Pre-IELTS exam preparation course normally runs in the afternoons only - please ask about this option.  This course is intended for students who are not yet ready to take our full IELTS exam preparation course but who would like to prepare for the course with IELTS-type learning material and get to know more about the exam itself.

Why IELTS?

Because IELTS is the standard English language component of the entry qualifications requested by most British and Australian colleges and universities.  More and more it is also becoming acceptable to American and other international establishments of further and higher education.

In addition, obtaining a good score in the IELTS test is now an important part of the entry requirements for international people who wish to work in the UK in fields such as nursing. IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System, and it is jointly managed by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL), the British Council and IDP Education Australia: IELTS Australia.  Most colleges in the UK will probably ask students to score about 5.5 or above for entry and most universities will ask for about 6.5 for entry to an undergraduate course.  IELTS scores requested vary between different educational establishments, so it is important to check what score is required for the course that you are interested in.

IELTS is accepted by over 6,000 institutions around the world, including universities, colleges and employers in English-speaking countries and beyond.  In fact, almost all universities in the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand accept IELTS.

In the USA, IELTS scores are accepted by thousands of universities and colleges, including Ivy League and other top institutions.

The test is offered up to 4 times per month by centres in more than 125 countries and results are available just 13 days after the test.

IELTS assesses all your skills - reading, writing, listening and speaking.

The test uses Australian, North American and British varieties of English, making it a truly international test.

For a list of institutions that recognise IELTS worldwide, visit: www.ielts.org

What level is the test?

IELTS is designed to test English at all levels, which means that anyone can take the test.

There is no such thing as a pass or fail with IELTS because everyone gets a score to reflect their level of English language ability.

Results are reported as band scores, on a scale from 1 (the lowest) to 9 (the highest).

9 - Expert user.
8 - Very good user.
7 - Good user.
6 - Competent user.
5 - Modest user.
4 - Limited user.
3 - Extremely limited user.
2 - Intermittent user.
1- Non user.
0 - Did not attempt the test.

There are two modules (ie. 2 different types of test): Academic and General.

Both of the two modules are graded using exactly the same criteria, so there is no difference in the level of English.  The only difference is the subject matter and the type of vocabulary used, which vary to suit the diverse interests of candidates.

The academic module is for candidates wishing to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels, or seeking professional registration.

The general module is for candidates wishing to migrate to an English-speaking country and for those wishing to train or study at below degree level.

Course components
At ETC International College, we have systems for ensuring that students receive personalized attention.  We aim to provide the kind of linguistic training and support that they need in order to make rapid progress and quickly attain a good degree of fluency and accuracy in English.  Students will study in small, multinational classes along with students of a similar age and language ability.

The maximum class size is normally 14, although this may rise to 18 during the busy summer period of June, July and August.

Built into every student’s course are the following: Placement test. This is designed to enable us to gauge the approximate level of a student and to place him or her in a class along with other students of similar ability. The IELTS exam preparation course is normally run at upper-intermediate level and above, so students will need to demonstrate that they can score approximately 65% or more in the ETC placement test for entry to our IELTS english course. Sometimes we are able to offer a Pre-IELTS course for those people who do not yet have the English level required for entry to the standard IELTS exam preparation course - please contact us about this possibility.

Needs analysis. This is used to find out what students need and would like to learn on their course, and also what further / higher education course they would like to take on completion of their IELTS exam preparation course.

Skills development. Development of the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking through meaningful practice.

Task-based activities designed to improve fluency, such as discussions, pair and group work, roleplays, problem-solving, and so on, so that they will be ready for the interview section of the IELTS test.

Systems work. Focus on and consolidation of the systems of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation for the IELTS test.  Students will learn and use new language forms and vocabulary through practice in contemporary, realistic, everyday situations, similar to those that they will be examined on in the IELTS test itself.

Supportive error correction and constructive feedback.Learner skills development.  We aim to teach students effective ways of learning, from efficient note-taking to ways of storing and activating vocabulary.  In particular, we would aim to encourage students to use self-access resources, such as the library, video room, listening materials, CD-Roms, the Internet and so on.

Progress tests. These are designed to show us how well a student is learning new forms and vocabulary, and how well he or she is able to apply new skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Tutorials. To provide two-way feedback, so that teachers can pass on hints, tips and advice on how best to study, as well as address any problems shown up by student's performance in class and in their progress tests.  At the same time, students can ask for help in areas that are particularly important for them.

Homework. An essential part of every student’s course – consolidates classwork and provides extra practice in the skills and systems.

Academic counselling. Distinct from the tutorials programme, the academic counselling that we provide aims to maximize every student’s potential, so that he or she could:
* Transfer to another course at ETC, such as an English for Special Purposes course.
* Apply to go on to study at a college or university in an English-speaking country.
* Seek work in an English-speaking environment (where visa regulations allow this). Preparation for other external examinations.
* Where possible, we would like to help every student to prepare for an external examination, so that he or she will be able to return home with an internationally-recognized qualification.
