The ETC 50+ course is aimed at people who want to visit one of the United Kingdom’s most beautiful areas, learn English and meet other similarly minded people.

Our course combines 15 hours of English tuition per week in smaller, more intimate classes. Lessons take place in the mornings with visits to local areas of cultural, natural and historic interest in the afternoons.

General English Courses

The aim of our programme is to build on your level of English and ensure that you come away with an understanding of the history and significance of the Dorset, Devon and Hampshire area.

Your days will be split equally with lessons taking place in the mornings and visits and activities taking place in the afternoons.

Your classes will take place in one of our recently refurbished classrooms equipped with the latest teaching materials and interactive white boards. Refreshments will be delivered at break time by our catering staff meaning that you do not have to queue for a coffee and a biscuit in the mid-morning beak.

Your teachers will be experienced in teaching English to 50+ clients and will accompany you on your activities and excursions during your time with us. They will also be on hand to answer any questions that you might have on points of interest and excursions.

Standard General English

(20 lessons = 15 hours per week).

Course Duration:
Our 50+ courses run for 2 weeks at a time to ensure that you get the most from your time in the UK. This means that we can also fit a lot into your course without you feeling rushed from place to place. Two weeks also gives us time to ensure that you can see and feel a real difference to your level of English.

Course Content:
We aim to make your course relaxed, informative, interesting and thought provoking. Your teachers will be experienced in teaching to older students and will promote relaxed conversation on a number of topics. You might like to examine English culture and history or look at the impact of Shakespeare or Dickens on modern English. You will be able to enjoy mini lectures and discussions related to your afternoon excursions that ensure your day is cohesive and relevant from start to finish. Lessons will proceed at a leisurely pace for those who may not have been in a classroom for years and time will be taken to examine any topic of the class’s choice. Cultural exchange will also be encouraged where possible.

Afternoons
Your afternoons will be spent learning about the local area and exploring all that it has to offer. From the ancient hunting grounds of William the Conqueror in the New Forest in the East to the strategically important Purbeck hills and the ruins of Corfe Castle destroyed in the English Civil war in the West, we will take you on a journey through some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK. Visit Poole Harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the world but with an average depth of just 48cms! Enter the concrete bunker where Winston Churchill, Eisenhower, George VI and Montgomery all stood at the same time to witness the preparations for D Day. Walk out to the spectacular “Old Harry Rocks” at Studland bay and drink in the atmosphere and a pint of real ale or homemade cider at the Bankes arms pub. We will take you to the world famous Stonehenge where you can learn about the world heritage site in a number of languages and of course no trip to the UK would be compete without a trip to London to see Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, Oxford street, Westminster and Big Ben.

Homestay:
Your accommodation will be with a friendly homestay in the Bournemouth and Poole area. We will endeavour to place you in a home where the homeowner shares your interests so you should find common ground from the first day. You will share a meal with them every evening and time with them on a Saturday and Sunday when they may ask you to join them on their usual routine. You will have a private bathroom and free wi-fi for the duration of your stay.

Accommodation options:
If you do not like the idea of staying with one of our families, we can also recommend and help organise a number of local Bed and Breakfasts or Hotels. Bournemouth is a popular tourist destination and ETC is located close to a number of good accommodation options. From the 5 star Marriot hotel to more modest options, we can help you find the right option for your needs if you prefer the privacy of a hotel to a host family.
