ETC International College provides a fantastic range of special English courses in Bournemouth to help students improve their English language skills. The special English courses which we provide include General English, Exam Preparation and Specialist Courses as well as University Foundation and Junior Programmes. On top of this, if you’re looking to teach English as a foreign language, we provide teacher training courses.

ETC provides linguistic training and support in English language which students need in order to make rapid progress. Also, students will receive personalised attention so that they can attain a good degree of fluency and accuracy in English. By the end of the student’s chosen English course, they will be able to write, read, speak and listen effectively in social, study and business environments.

6. C1/C2 (Advanced)

Please inform us in advance if you are A1 or C2 as these courses will require special attention.  Beginners must start on set start dates.  Please view these dates on our Dates and Fees page.

Age Requirements

  • The minimum age for individual students from September to May is 16.
  • The minimum age for individual students from June to August is 12.
  • Students aged 16 & 17 may study in an adult General English class at any time of the year with permission from their parents.
  • The maximum duration a student aged 15 and under may stay in an ETC Homestay is 26 nights (unless a suitable foster family can be found).
  • Individual students aged 15 and under in the summer must book a Junior Programme.
  • Individual students aged 12 to 15 in the summer must book a Junior Programme if they wish to stay in the Junior Residence.
  • Next of kin details must be received for all students aged 17 and under prior to document issue.
  • Signed parental permission forms (signed by the parent) must be received for all students aged 17 and under prior to document issue.
  • Students aged 16 and 17 who are booked onto an adult course programme MUST follow junior policies and procedures, including curfew times.


Students must have a course book in order to enter classes.

Students studying for 3 weeks or less can borrow books for a small charge.
Students studying for 4 or more weeks must buy their books.
Books cost approximately £50 for standard courses and £70 for intensive and special English courses. Book are available at the ETC Library.

Please Note…

All lessons are 45 minutes long. ETC specifies a maximum class size of 18.  However, our average class size in off-peak season is lower.  No classes will exceed 18 students.

Classes may be in the mornings or afternoons during busy periods.

Students following a standard general English course (20 lessons per week) may have morning or afternoon lessons. Classes are normally run in the mornings from 8.45am to 12.15pm, but we cannot guarantee this timetable. During the busy summer months, students may have lessons in the afternoons.

Students who require a student visa must complete at least 15 hours of study per week (i.e. 20 lessons per week).

Each level takes an average 12 weeks to complete. If you achieve a particular CEFR score, you will be able to progress to the next level! Some students take more or less than 12 weeks to go from level to level; at ETC we are aware of this and adapt our classes around you.


You will have regular progress tests and a proficiency test every 6 weeks to check your level. You are given a Learner Portfolio, which monitors your progress throughout the course.


All of our teachers have been selected for the high standard of their knowledge of teaching and training techniques. All of our teachers have a minimum of the industry recognised teaching qualification; most of our teachers have much more than this.


We teach English at all levels, and you can start on any Monday of the year. Please inform us in advance if you are level A1 or C2, as these courses require special attention.
